    Dhangadhi : Chhath festival concluded with the worshiping of the sun god on Monday.

    It is believed that Chhath Puja is in practice since Vedic ages.

    Many stories around Chhath Puja are narrated and shared among people. It is said that Karna, who was the son of the Sun, performed this puja. Karna was the king of Anga Desh, which is believed to be present day Bhagalpur in Bihar.

    It is also said that Draupadi had also observed this fast in order to beat the obstacles and hurdles that had come in hers and Pandavas’ life.

    It is also said that Sita was blessed with Luv and Kush after she did the Chhath Puja.

    The 114th birth anniversary of Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota

    KATHMANDU: The 114th birth anniversary of Mahakavi (great poet laureate) of Nepali literature, Laxmi Prasad Devkota, is being marked by organizing various programs in the country and abroad today.

    Devkota is one of the most influential and acclaimed poets of Nepali literature.

    Poet laureate Devkota, born on Kartik 27, 1966 BS, on the auspicious day of Laxmi Puja of the Tihar festival has contributed a lot to modern Nepali literature with several masterpieces.

    He also contributed to internationalizing the Nepali language and literature. Shakuntala, Sulochana, Maharanapartap and some others are his famous literary creations.

    Similarly, Devkota’s Munamadan is the most popular piece in Nepali literature.

    Poet Devkota played a vital role to make the Nepali language mandatory in the school curriculum when he served as the Education Minister.

    Poet laureate Devkota also contributed a lot to establishing then Royal Nepal Academy.

    He passed away on Bhadra 29, 2016 BS.

    Disaster in Darchula: loss of property, more than a dozen people suspected to be missing

    Darchula: In Darchula, people’s property has been damaged due to floods, landslides and lightning. Disasters have occurred in various places of the district due to the rains that have been happening since Friday night.

    Three people lost their lives due to flash floods and landslides in Darchula district:

    Mohan Singh Parki of Dallekh died after being struck by lightning last night in Naugad Rural Municipality Rural Municipality-2 of the district. 30-year-old Kimti Thagunna died in a landslide in Naugad Rural Municipality-1 Salla. Moti Thagunna, daughter of Pansingh Thagunna of the same place, also died.

    Rescue of three:

    Pansingh Thagunna’s father and Phaguni Thagunna’s mother, who were trapped in a landslide in Naugad Rural Municipality, have been rescued alive. Local Bira Thagunna was rescued with broken limbs.

    More than a dozen are suspected to be missing:
    A number of people are suspected to be missing due to the landslide in Naugad. So far, 11 people have gone missing in Bangabagad area of Darchula headquarters Khalanga.

    Similarly, a school, 11 houses, two bridges and some vehicles were swept away by the flood in Bangabgad area of Khalanga, according to the police stationed there.

    Who is in the rescue work?
    Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police teams along with local people have been deployed at the scene of the incident for rescue work.

    Similarly, it is said that due to the incessant rain, the water level in the Mahakali river has risen to the top of the concrete embankment. It has been requested to be cautious in the areas around the Mahakali river.

    Bajhang: The municipal level project advisory committee review meeting has been completed under the project of increasing stability in education implemented in the village of Bajhang and Jaiprithvi municipality. The meeting was concluded in Jai Prithvi Municipality of the district under the chairmanship of City Chief Chetraj Bajal.

    Uma Bhatt, education development officer working in Bajhang district of Reed Nepal, informed that the program is being implemented in 11 schools under the project of improving stability in education under Jai Prithvi Municipality and four secondary schools in Diyanot Rural Municipality.

    Similarly, the Education Development Officer Bhatt said that this project has supported the children’s education by emphasizing quality education while presenting the work sheet of achievements including the review of all the activities done by this project so far.

    Likewise, the ‘Enhancement of Stability in Education’ project run by Reed Nepal with the financial support of the Australian Government (DFAT) has helped the reading of secondary school children in the region and to make it more effective, said Bhim Bogti, the executive head of Reed Nepal.

    Likewise, Chetraj Bajal, the municipal head of the municipality, promised that the project has provided good support in education and the municipality will always be ready to implement it more effectively.

    In addition to this, an 11-member advisory committee was formed under the coordination of Deputy Mayor Ratan Bahadur Singh for the municipal level project advisory committee in Jai Prithvi municipality.

    The mayor, deputy mayor, chief administrative officer, head of education, principal of all seven secondary schools, CEO of Read Nepal and education development officers working in Bajhang district were present in the review meeting.

    LISBON: A total of 119 suspects have been arrested for the crime of arson this year as serious fires hit Portugal due to a heat wave and severe drought, causing consequences for agriculture and other primary supply systems.

    “We have this year a detention rate that is already much more than double that of the previous years” as a result of inspection work carried out jointly by the military police, the National Republican Guard, and the Judiciary Police said the Portuguese Minister of Internal Administration Jose Luis Carneiro on Sunday.

    Speaking at an event in the city of Leiria, central Portugal, Carneiro revealed that “other investigations are underway to detect the causes of other fires, which could lead to other arrests.”

    This year, the government strengthened “the inspection and surveillance mechanisms,” in conjunction with the Air Force, in addition to installing 230 fixed lookout posts and video surveillance, the minister added.

    Carneiro expressed “unconditional” solidarity with the firefighters who fight the fires.

    Janai Purnima festival being observed today

    KATHMANDU: The festival of ‘Janai Purnima’ or ‘Rishi Tarpani’ is being celebrated across the country today.

    The festival is basically observed by the majority Hindus in the country.

    On the occasion of Janai Purnima, the tagadharis or those who wear the ‘Janai’ (the sacred thread) around their bodies from the left shoulder to right change the sacred thread today after having a haircut and a bath.

    According to the time-honoured tradition, Hindu people receive the ‘Raksha Bandhan’ thread, which is tied around the wrist as an amulet.

    The yellow thread is purified through the chanting of mantras by Brahmin priests as a symbol of protection from fear and disease, said Prof Dr Ram Chandra Gautam, former chairperson of the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti (Calendar Determination Committee).

    The occasion is also observed as ‘Kwanti Purnima’ by the Newar community. Kwanti, a soup prepared from nine different beans, is a special delicacy added to the Nepali menu today.

    In the Tarai region, there is a tradition in which sisters tie an attractive ‘Rakhi’ around the wrist of their brothers wishing them long life and prosperity.

    Today, thousands of devotees worship lord Shiva at Pashupatinath in Kathmandu and at Kumbheswar in Lalitpur and other Shiva temples across the country, and take holy dips in ponds and lakes and rivers.

    Religious fairs are held at Gosainkunda, an alpine area in Rasuwa District, and at Dansanghu, Triveni in Jumla district to observe the festival with offerings to Lord Shiva.

    A big religious fair takes place at the Gosainkunda Lake and pilgrims come from faraway places to take a holy dip in this lake and other lakes nearby.

    Religious fairs are organised at Pashupati and Manichud of Kathmandu; Gosainkunda of Rasuwa; Kumbheshwar of Lalitpur; Panchpokhari of Sindhupalchok; Janakpurdham, Dhanush Sagar and Ganga Sagar of Dhanusha, Dansanghu of Jumla and Trivenidham of Nawalparasi.

    KATHMANDU : The fifth month of the Hindu calendar, the Shrawan month, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and one of the important festivals of this month is Nag Panchmi. This year, Nag Panchami, which is considered extremely auspicious by Hindus, falls on Tuesday, August 2. On this day, people worship Lord Shiva and Nag Devta. As per Hindu mythology, performing these pujas will help devotees obtain Lord Shiva’s blessings and will set them free from their sins.

    Take a bath and wear clean clothes early in the morning. Keep a fast on this auspicious day and place an idol of Nag Devta and Lord Shiva where you want to perform the puja. Furthermore, pour water and milk on Nag Devta statue. Following this, present a cup of milk to Nag Devta and offer prasad to Lord Shiva. Recite the mantras of Nag Panchami Puja. Offer the food that you have prepared to Nag Devta.

    KATHMANDU: Main opposition CPN-UML is making public its commitment paper for the local level elections today (Friday).

    UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli will unveil the commitment paper at a program to be organized at Tulsi Lal Memorial Foundation at 1 pm, said a UML leader.

    The policy and Research Academy and the Department of Local Development of the party have jointly prepared the commitment paper following a series of discussions.

    Meanwhile, the UML is shifting its central party office from Thapathali to Tulsilal Memorial Foundation at Cyasal in Lalitpur from today.

    Similarly, the party is observing its 74th Establishment Day today during which party chairman Oli will welcome new entrants to the party.

    The local level election is being held on May 13.

    Nepali Army intensifies rescue, relief efforts

    KATHMANDU: The Nepali Army has been at work for rescue and relief distribution efforts for flood and landslide survivors, resulting from the torrential rain that has hit the country since the past few days.

    Five people who were trapped by the flooded Mahakali river at Bhimdatta Municipality-9 in Kanchanpur district have been airlifted to safety, said the Public Relations and Information Directorate, Nepali Army.

    Many flood and landslide survivors at Dodhara Chandani Municipality-8, 9 and 10 and Bhimdatta Municipality-11 and 12 in Kanchanpur district, Rajapur Municipality-1, 2 and 3 in Bardiya district, Dipayal Silgadhi Municipality-4, 5 and 6 in Doti district, Itahari Sub Metropolitan City, Tarahara and Panipiya in Sunsari district and Biratnagar-5 in Morang district have been rescued to safety.

    Three of four persons who had gone missing in a landslide at Chaubise Rural Municipality-1 in Dhankuta district have been rescued alive and a search has been launched for the fourth person, said the Directorate.

    Likewise, the NA helped to retrieve the bodies of two persons who were buried by a landslide at Phidim Municipality-4 in Panchthar district.

    KATHMANDU: Saroj Kumar Upadhyaya, the youngest brother of CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal, has been appointed as the central committee member of the party.

    Engineer by profession, Upadhyaya has been given the responsibility of the Department of Science and Technology.

    Among three sons of late Mangal Prasad Upadhyaya, Madhav Nepal is the eldest son, Binod second eldest son and Saroj is the youngest son.
